Shepherd’s Hand Pies

The Kind of Meal That Feels Like Home

Some recipes are less about impressing guests and more about feeding people you love. Shepherd’s Hand Pies fall squarely into that category. Wrapped in a flaky sourdough pie crust and filled with savory beef, potatoes, and herbs, these little pies feel hearty, comforting, and deeply satisfying.

They are the kind of meal that makes the kitchen smell incredible while they bake. Golden pastry, rich filling, and a warm tray pulled from the oven all signal that something good is about to be shared.

Inspired by a Classic Comfort Dish

Traditional shepherd’s pie is known for its cozy layers of meat, vegetables, and mashed potatoes. These hand pies take that familiar flavor and tuck it into individual pockets of flaky crust. Each one becomes its own little serving of comfort food.

The beef filling simmers with onion, garlic, and Worcestershire sauce, creating a savory richness that pairs beautifully with tender potatoes. When wrapped in sourdough pastry and baked until golden, the result feels both rustic and satisfying.

Perfect for Busy Evenings or Make Ahead Meals

One of the best things about Shepherd’s Hand Pies is how practical they are. They are easy to serve, easy to store, and perfect for meal prep. Bake a batch and keep them on hand for quick lunches, simple dinners, or even packed meals on the go.

Because each pie is individually portioned, they reheat beautifully. The crust stays crisp while the filling warms through, making leftovers just as enjoyable as the first bite.

Comfort Food Made From Scratch

Using homemade sourdough pie crust adds an extra layer of flavor and texture to these hand pies. The crust bakes into tender, flaky layers that hold the savory filling without feeling heavy.

It is a small step that transforms the dish from something simple into something memorable. The balance of buttery pastry and rich beef filling creates a meal that feels thoughtful and deeply comforting.

A Cozy Recipe Worth Sharing

Shepherd’s Hand Pies are the kind of recipe that quietly becomes part of family traditions. They are warm, filling, and perfect for gathering around the table on a chilly evening.

Whether served with a simple salad, roasted vegetables, or enjoyed on their own, these little pies deliver all the comfort of a classic shepherd’s pie in a handheld form that feels both nostalgic and new.

Ingredients

  • 2 Sourdough Pie Crusts
  • 57 g Butter
  • 1 lb Ground Beef
  • 1 Russet Potato (diced into small pieces)
  • ½ Onion (diced)
  • 2 Garlic Cloves (minced)
  • 120 g Beef Bone Broth
  • 35 g All Purpose Flour
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 tbsp Fresh Parsely (finely chopped)
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1 Egg (for the egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Add the butter to a hot skillet over medium heat to melt. Add the diced onion and potato, allowing it to saute until the onions are translucent, roughly 5 minutes. Add the ground beef and cook until it is fully browned. This should take around 8 minutes. Once browned add the minced garlic.
  2. Add the beef bone broth and sprinkle the flour over the beef. Stir to combine until all of the flour has been absorbed. Add the Worcestershire sauce, fresh parsley, salt, garlic powder, and pepper. Allow the mixture to cook over medium/low heat for 5 minutes. Then, cover and set aside.
  3. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Roll each of your pie crusts into an even rectangle, roughly 10”x15”. Using a pizza cutter, cut each rectangle into 8 small rectangles. Add a scoop of the meat filling to 8 of the pie crust pieces, being careful to keep the filling away from the edges. Then, top the filling with another rectangle of pie crust to cover. Use a fork to crimp the edges to enclose the meat filling. Make sure this crimp in very secure to avoid leakage during baking. Score the top of each hand pie with a knife to allow steam to escape.
  4. Place each hand pie on a parchment lined baking sheet. Brush with egg wash and bake for roughly 20 minutes, until the crust is evenly golden brown.
