Fluffy Yeasted Sandwich Bread

The Soft, Sliceable Loaf Every Kitchen Needs

There is something reassuring about a fresh loaf of sandwich bread cooling on the counter. The golden top, the soft interior, the promise of toast in the morning or sandwiches at lunch. This fluffy yeasted sandwich bread is the kind of everyday recipe that quietly becomes essential.

It is tender without being fragile, sturdy enough for fillings, and soft enough to enjoy with nothing more than a swipe of butter. Once you make it at home, store bought loaves feel like a compromise.

What Makes This Bread So Soft

The secret to truly fluffy sandwich bread lies in balance. Warm milk creates a soft crumb, honey adds gentle sweetness, and butter enriches the dough for that classic pillowy texture. Active dry yeast provides reliable lift, giving the loaf its height and lightness.

Proper mixing helps develop structure while keeping the interior tender. When baked in a loaf pan, the shape stays even and sliceable, perfect for everything from grilled cheese to French toast.

Not Sourdough, Still Worth It

Even though I am known for sourdough baking, there is something special about a classic yeasted loaf. Baking any bread at home, whether naturally leavened or made with commercial yeast, brings a freshness and softness that store bought bread simply cannot match. You control the ingredients, the texture, and the flavor, and the simple act of mixing and shaping dough adds meaning to the process. This fluffy yeasted sandwich bread may not use starter, but it still delivers that same homemade comfort in every slice.

Endless Ways to Enjoy It

Fluffy yeasted sandwich bread works for nearly every meal. Toast it for breakfast with jam or peanut butter. Use it for classic deli sandwiches. Turn it into garlic bread for pasta night. Cube it for croutons or bread pudding when you want to use every last slice.

Its mild flavor makes it incredibly versatile. Sweet or savory toppings both shine against its soft crumb.

A Foundational Recipe Worth Keeping

Every home baker benefits from having a reliable sandwich bread recipe. This fluffy yeasted sandwich bread delivers consistent results with simple ingredients and a straightforward method. It is comforting, practical, and satisfying from the first rise to the final slice.

If you are looking for an easy homemade bread recipe that fits seamlessly into weekly routines, this loaf deserves a permanent place in your kitchen.

Ingredients

  • cups Warm Milk
  • 4 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • ¼ cup Honey
  • 2 tsp Active Dry Yeast
  • 4 tbsp Butter

Instructions

  1. Gently warm your milk in the microwave or over the stove. Make sure it is warm, NOT hot. Add your active dry yeast to the milk and let sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, add the flour, salt, and honey to the bowl of your stand mixer. Add the milk and yeast mixture. Mix on low until everything is well combined, roughly 5 minutes.
  3. Increase the speed slightly and add your butter. Mix for 15 minutes. The dough should be pulling away from the sides of the bowl.
  4. After the mixing is done, remove the dough from the bowl and knead it for just a minute to form it into a smooth ball. Place it back in the bowl.
  5. Cover the bowl and allow the dough to rise for +/- 2 hours. The dough should double in size.
  6. After the first rise, remove the dough from the bowl and flatten it out onto your shaping surface. Roll it up tightly like a burrito and place it in a 13”x4” loaf tin. I use a non-stick pullman loaf pan. Grease your pan if it is prone to sticking.
  7. Cover the loaf tin and allow it to rise for an additional 30-60 minutes. It should gain noticeable volume.
  8. Bake at 375°F for 40 minutes.
